I thought my German guys were getting a bit flaky, but when I went to Greg's Stammtisch last night the only other person perched on a stool at the bar was Rob, happily sipping some super special Bourbon. Well, what gives, still worth coming. They're both nice guys, good company, and the bartender was professional for a change. Professional staff at The Red, you might ask? Holy Cannoli! I was stunned! After I've suffered plenty of oblivious pseudo-cool, no-clue-but-arrogant, girlie-girl bitchy waitresses, who (worst of crimes) always managed to serve whatever beer I ordered in the wrong glass. Alas, there might be hope!

Noch zwei Waldbrände in Santa Cruz County seit letztem Wochende, eines im relativ dicht besiedelten Larkin Valley (Foto/Mercury News), das andere weiter südlich auf Mount Madonna . Die Zahl der Feuer ist absolut unfassbar, nachdem ich mich an kein einziges grösseres vor diesem Sommer erinnern kann. Laut San Jose Mercury News ist Santa Cruz von allen Landkreisen in Kalifornien mit am stärksten betroffen:

Among the hardest hit of them is Santa Cruz County [...] Combined, the fires there have burned more than 5,000 acres and destroyed over 110 buildings.

Der San Francisco Chronicle berichtet heute, dass allein in den letzten Tagen 800 Feuer in Nordkalifornien ausgebrochen sind, die derzeit noch nicht unter Kontrolle sind. Viel wurden am Samstag von Blitzeinschlägen verursacht während ein "trockenen Gewitter" über den Norden des Staates zog. Und die "Fire Season" hat gerade erst angefangen...

Gary and I (Hi Gary!) went to Aldo's at the Santa Cruz harbor today. The patio on the water is the perfect place for brunch during the summer months. Während die Mutter und ich am skypen waren, haben sich immer wieder ein paar Jays vor dem Fenster lautstark eingemischt. Wie versprochen habe ich ein paar Bilder ausfindig gemacht, die den Western Scrub Jay, auch California Scrub Jay genannt, besser zeigen als die Webcam konnte. Obwohl er nur im Westen der US vorkommt habe ich auf Avibase, einer Internet Vogeldatei, den deutschen Namen ausfindig gemacht. Somit darf ich berichten, dass zwei Buschhäher die Nachbarschaft unsicher machen. Wikipedia hat leider nur einen Eintrag auf Englisch, aber auch ein paar Fotos aufzuweisen. Buschhäher sind frech, aggressiv, aber auf der anderen Seite auch unheimlich hübsch mit ihrem leuchtend blauen Gefieder.

I'm so happy Jayla's Anusara Yoga Summer Series started. 18 people showed up for the first session, which is a welcome change from the size of her Cabrillo classes. It's still very afffordable, which I find amazing, considering what a great teacher she is. We also have the most beautiful room in the Vet's Building, the smaller upstairs front room. The view from the row of French windows is laced with the green leaves of the trees in front of the building.

Endlich wieder Yoga! Solange war die Pause gar nicht, aber ich vermisse es schon wenn ich zwei Wochen aussetze. Ich finde es super, dass meine Lehrerin Jayla diesen Sommer private Yogaklassen anbietet. Letztes Jahr habe ich in der Sommerpause Pilates ausprobiert, nur um festzustellen, dass es mir weit weniger liegt. Der Sommerkurs ist für eine kleinere Gruppe angelegt, ist aber trotzdem noch günstig, was ich erstaunlich finde in Anbetracht der Tatsache, dass Jayla eine wirklich gute Lehrerin ist. Ausserdem haben wir noch den schönsten Raum im der ganzen Vet's Hall. Die grossen Fenster vorne im zweiten Stock haben einen natürlichen grünen Vorhang und Blickschutz in den hochgewachsenen Bäumen vor dem Gebäude.

My German ladies and I had so much fun at Saturday's fireworks that we decided to come back to the boardwalk for the first of the Summer Concerts. Friday night will feature the The Romantics. If you don't remember the name of the band, you probably remember "That's what I like about you." Blast from the Past! There are some Eighties bands in the line-up that could be great fun. I will miss the Gin Blossoms and The Tubes. They both play in August when I'm in Germany. I will be able to catch Blue Oyster Cult July 25th, and I might stop by to check out some of the other bands, too. It's only a short walk from my house, it's for free, and I often appreciate the energy even if the music isn't exactly my favorite kind. I always enjoy the atmosphere, the color palette when the lights on stage and wharf come on while the sun sets slowly over the ocean.

Unglaublich, da muss die Brigitte aus San Jose anrufen um mich darauf aufmerksam zu machen, dass der Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk heute nach Sonnenuntergang ein Feuerwerk in Szene setzt. Trotz der verheerenden Brände in letzter Zeit, so sehe ich Feuer doch immer noch gerne: Unter Kontrolle. Heike und Angela kommen auch mit, wahrscheinlich erstmal zur Brauerei, dann an den Strand, zu unserem kleinen, ausserordentlichen Deutschdamentreffen.

Another fire in Santa Cruz, this one hitting much closer to home. When it started yesterday afternoon, the huge plume actually appeared to be rising from campus. Even early news reports mentioned a fire "above UCSC," which is exactly how it looked, particularly from downtown Santa Cruz. Triggered by inquiries, the university's Public Information Office had to send out an email to all UCSC affiliates:

"UC Santa Cruz fire personnel have responded to a fire in the Bonny Doon area, reported during the afternoon of Wednesday, June 11. Smoke from the fire can be seen from parts of the UCSC campus. In fact, from some vantage points, the fire may appear to be on the campus. The fire is not on the UCSC campus. "

That parts of Bonny Doon should be ablaze wasn't exactly a relief, either, considering the number of homes there. My boss and her family live there. It even turned out that the fire had started very close to their property, and they soon had to leave, following mandatory evacuation alerts. She brought good news to work this morning. The wind had driven the fire away from their house, so it was spared. Let's hope this one's going to be contained fast. (Photos : Karen T. Bonny Doon Fire_Moore Creek #3

I am so excited! As of today I have the privilege to consider myself part of… drum roll… The Press! (Small part, tiny part of The Press… but still!) Nobody was around to record it, unfortunately, so you’ll have to employ your imagination to recreate in your mind how I broke out in a little crazy dance upon receiving the good news: doobedoobedoo, yippie, yippie, yippie! Why the jig, you might ask? Well, I tell you why:
Shakespeare Santa Cruz is reaching out to encourage coverage by the alternative media, and they, i.e. Director of Marketing & PR Dana Werdmuller, reached out and encouraged blogging little me. I mentioned Shakespeare Santa Cruz in a recent blog entry, which apparently had a little bell at SSC Public Relations spring into action via Google Alert, and VOILA! I received the generous offer of a press pass from SSC, which translates into two tickets each for the festival performances of my choice if I can commit to blogging about my experience. O yes, o yes, you bet I can! I’ll be able to attend 3 out of 4 plays before I take off to Germany. I can’t wait! It'll be so much fun.

Ich bin ganz aufgeregt, seit heute bin ich offiziell Presse! Gestern hat mich aus heiterem Himmel Shakespeare Santa Cruz kontaktiert, ob ich Lust hätte über Aufführungen der diesjährigen Festspiele zu bloggen. Man möchte dieses Jahr die Berichterstattung der alternativen Medien fördern und wäre über Google Alert auf meinen Blog aufmerksam geworden. Ich bekäme einen Pressepass, d.h. zwei Karten für die Theaterstücke meiner Wahl, wenn ich mich bereit erklären würde Kritiken über die besuchten Vorstellungen zu verfassen und in meinen Blog zu stellen. Ich sollte nur Bescheid sagen welche Termine mir denn passen würden. Wie bitte? Nachdem ich damit fertig war mir ausgiebig die verwunderten Augen zu reiben, habe mich ganz frech für die samstagabendliche Premiere von Romeo und Julia angemeldet, plus Bach in Leipzig am Wochenende darauf, und noch Ende gut alles gut! hinterhergeschoben. (Wenn’s nicht so knapp werden würde mit dem Abflug nach Deutschland hätte ich das vierte Stück der Saison, Burn This, auch noch mitgenommen) Kein Problem, abgemacht, sagt die Dame von Marketing & Public Relations. Ich bin noch ganz platt, freue mich aber natürlich riesig, war ich doch schon immer ein grosser Fan von Shakespeare Santa Cruz.

The Fall

One critic on Rottentomatoes.com (where you can also find a synopsis) commented that “It looks spectacular, but a book of The Fall photographs would be just as compelling as the movie.” True, the images display an abstract, staged beauty that invites aesthetic appreciation, but fails to evoke a more emotional response. (Check out the films very handsome website) There's not much character development in the bandit story, either, that would particularly endear the protagonists to the viewer. But the fairy tale with its fantastic visuals has one unexpected effect. In juxtaposition, the small, private spaces in the hospital seem really intimate, and let our attention focus on the warmth and closeness between the stuntman and the girl. It’s a tried–and–true artist’s device to demonstrate the awe-inspiring size of a mountain by placing a tiny, cozy cabin at the foot of it. In The Fall the opposite is true. The grand landscapes lead me to appreciate the human scale, i.e. the soul & sweetness in the small scenes played out beside it. Actors Lee Pace and Catinca Untaro are both adorable.

Right now we're experiencing a bit of a lag between the end of the concert season and the upcoming summer festivals. The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music is on my schedule for July, as is Shakespeare Santa Cruz, but right now there isn't too much going on. The only recent art event I can report about is the opening of a show of Chris Ryan's travel photos, to which indie film buddies Chris & Amy invited me. Some gorgeous shots of some gorgeous places, as you can see on Chris' website Views of the World. He also has 2 pages dedicated to shots of little old Santa Cruz.

Wir erfahren gerade eine kleine kulturelle Flaute zwischen dem Ende der Konzert Saison und dem Anfang der Sommer Festivals. Ein bisschen Kunst durfte ich dank Indie Film Bekannten Chris Ryan tanken, der mich zur Vernissage seiner Fotoaustellung eingeladen hat. Viele der Arbeiten sind online zu begutachten auf seiner Website Views of the World, wo er unter anderem auch 2 Seiten Santa Cruz gewidmet hat.

If you know me at all you know that I don't find babies adorable per se. Kelly and Ivano's Becca, though, always looks cute, either because she has a funny look on her face, or because she's having fun, or both.

Wer mich kennt weiss, dass ich Babies nicht unbedingt niedlich finde. Kelly & Ivanos Kleine sieht allerdings immer lustig aus, d.h. entweder sie schaut aus der Wäsche, dass sich der Betrachter amüsiert, oder sie amüsiert sich schlichtweg selbst, oder beides.
