we were an industrious species
our lights strung the planet with hampers and nests
in thin steel pods we filed
across expanses we drained and fertilized
to grow our rows to feed our appetite
for hatch and crosshatch
to speculate the atom
we built an engine blue as fire
it swarmed the seven continents
it oversaw the clouds to the round horizon
its moving finger weighed divided
scripting the news of our dominion
