New Year's Eve With an Indian Theme

I went to Monterey to hook up with Paul, whom I hadn't seen in a while. Before all the "First Night" activities downtown got into gear we watched "Slumdog Millionaire." So many people had recommended the movie that I finally caved in. Well, it was "Slumdog", or "The Day the Earth Stood Still", which would have been Paul's first choice if the reviews hadn't been so extremely negative. Yes, "Slumdog" is a very engaging movie with a happy ending that left me feeling good for the night. For the night, mind you, more on that later. To stay with the Indian theme, we decided on Indian food, and tried Indian Summer since it was close to Custom House Plaza, the focal point of First Night. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for any other night of the year. Indian Summer cannot make up its mind if it wants to be a bar, or a restaurant offering "fine dining". It tries to be both, which results in a place that feels very much like a pub with disorganized service and exorbitant prices for the food. The Chicken Tikka Masala we ordered was surprisingly good, though. We were also treated to belly dance performances, which was fun and festive and much appreciated by all the patrons. We had a good time considering the whole experience a part of the First Night celebration. We checked out events on the plaza, on and around Alvarado for the rest of the night. Overall it was a sweet and mellow New Year's Eve, a level of excitement that suited me very well after I've been fighting a cold for a few days now. (Photo by Deivis)
